Econazole is an imidazole-class antifungal medication primarily used to treat fungal skin infections such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, and candidiasis. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased membrane permeability and fungal cell death. Econazole is commonly available as topical creams, lotions, and powders. It is effective against a broad spectrum of dermatophytes, yeasts, and some gram-positive bacteria. Side effects are generally mild and may include local irritation or itching at the application site.
Econazole works by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, which is essential for converting lanosterol to ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption in ergosterol synthesis weakens the fungal cell membrane, increases its permeability, and ultimately leads to fungal cell death, effectively treating fungal infections.
