Enalapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat hypertension, heart failure, and to help protect renal function in at-risk patients (e.g., diabetic nephropathy). By reducing angiotensin II formation, it relaxes blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and decreases cardiac workload. It is commonly supplied as the maleate salt and is marketed under brands such as Vasotec and Renitec.
Enalapril inhibits ACE, blocking conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor. Reduced angiotensin II lowers vascular resistance and aldosterone secretion, decreasing sodium and water retention. The net effect is vasodilation, reduced preload/afterload, and blood pressure lowering.
