Esomeprazole Magnesium is the magnesium salt of esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) belonging to the benzimidazole class. It works by selectively and irreversibly inhibiting the gastric H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme in stomach parietal cells, effectively reducing gastric acid secretion. This mechanism makes it useful in treating acid-related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome.
Esomeprazole Magnesium is absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the gastric parietal cells, where it is converted into its active sulfenamide form. It then irreversibly binds to and inhibits the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme (the proton pump), which catalyzes the final step of acid secretion in the stomach. This irreversible inhibition significantly reduces gastric acid production until new enzymes are synthesized, resulting in prolonged acid suppression and symptom relief.
