Etoricoxib is a selective COX-2 inhibitor and a member of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) class. It is primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation in conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, and acute dental pain. By selectively inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme responsible for prostaglandin synthesis, Etoricoxib alleviates inflammation and pain while minimizing gastrointestinal side effects associated with traditional NSAIDs. It is marketed globally under brand names such as Arcoxia and Nucoxia.
Etoricoxib acts by selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), the enzyme responsible for prostaglandin production at inflammation sites. This inhibition decreases prostaglandin levels, which are key mediators of pain, inflammation, and swelling. Because it has minimal activity against COX-1, which maintains gastric mucosal protection and renal blood flow, Etoricoxib offers potent anti-inflammatory effects with a lower risk of gastrointestinal irritation or ulceration compared to non-selective NSAIDs.
