Famciclovir is an oral antiviral prodrug that is converted to penciclovir in vivo. It is used to treat herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes, and varicella-zoster infections, offering high bioavailability and convenient dosing.
Famciclovir is converted into penciclovir in the body, which then selectively inhibits viral DNA polymerase. It stops viral DNA replication by competitively blocking the incorporation of deoxyguanosine triphosphate. This action is highly specific to infected cells, so normal human DNA synthesis remains largely unaffected.
