Finasteride is a medication that belongs to the class of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone involved in the development of conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness. Finasteride is commonly prescribed to treat enlarged prostate and to promote hair growth in men with androgenetic alopecia. It helps reduce prostate size, improve urinary symptoms, and slow hair loss progression.
Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Since DHT is a key hormone responsible for prostate enlargement and hair follicle shrinkage in male pattern baldness, blocking its production helps reduce prostate size and slows or reverses hair loss.
