Indinavir sulfate is a potent antiretroviral drug belonging to the HIV 1 protease inhibitor class. As a sulfate salt, it is formulated for oral use, with good bioavailability when properly administered. Its mechanism targets the viral protease enzyme — an essential component in the HIV life cycle — thereby preventing the maturation of viral polyproteins and blocking production of infectious viral particles. As a result, Indinavir suppresses viral replication and reduces HIV viral load in infected individuals.
Indinavir binds selectively and potently to the active site of HIV 1 protease, inhibiting its enzymatic activity. By inhibiting the protease, Indinavir prevents the cleavage of viral gag pol polyproteins — a critical step required to produce mature, infectious virions. As a result, the virus produces immature, non infectious particles, halting further infection cycles.
