Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide widely used as an osmotic laxative and prebiotic. It is poorly absorbed in the small intestine and metabolized by colonic bacteria to produce acids that increase osmotic pressure, drawing water into the colon. This action softens stools and promotes bowel movement, while also supporting beneficial gut flora.
