Metformin Hydrochloride is a widely used oral antihyperglycemic agent prescribed for type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the biguanide class and works by improving insulin sensitivity, decreasing hepatic glucose production, and enhancing peripheral glucose uptake. It is often the first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes and supports weight management with a low risk of hypoglycemia.
Metformin Hydrochloride lowers blood glucose primarily by reducing hepatic gluconeogenesis. It enhances insulin sensitivity, promoting glucose uptake in muscle and adipose tissue, and reduces intestinal glucose absorption. Unlike insulin secretagogues, it does not stimulate insulin release, minimizing hypoglycemia risk.
