Nitazoxanide is a broad-spectrum antiprotozoal and antiviral Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) widely used for intestinal parasitic infections and viral gastroenteritis. It is effective against Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum, helminths, anaerobic bacteria, and several viruses including rotavirus and norovirus. Its excellent safety profile makes it suitable for both adults and children.
Nitazoxanide blocks pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR)-dependent electron transfer reactions, disrupting anaerobic energy metabolism in protozoa and some bacteria. It also inhibits viral protein maturation in certain viruses, preventing replication and survival.
