Verapamil Hydrochloride is a calcium channel blocker used to manage hypertension, angina pectoris, and various cardiac arrhythmias such as supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). It works by reducing calcium ion influx into cardiac and smooth muscle cells, improving blood flow and reducing the workload of the heart.
Verapamil selectively blocks L-type calcium channels in cardiac and vascular smooth muscle. This action decreases myocardial contractility, slows heart rate, dilates coronary and peripheral blood vessels, reduces blood pressure, and helps restore normal heart rhythm.
