Vinblastine Sulfate is a chemotherapeutic agent belonging to the Vinca alkaloid class. It is primarily used in the treatment of various cancers, including Hodgkin’s lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, testicular cancer, breast cancer, and Kaposi’s sarcoma. Vinblastine works by inhibiting microtubule formation, thereby preventing cell division and inducing apoptosis in rapidly proliferating cancer cells.
Vinblastine binds to tubulin, preventing microtubule assembly. This action disrupts mitotic spindle formation during cell division, leading to cell cycle arrest at metaphase and subsequent apoptosis. It is highly effective against rapidly dividing malignant cells while sparing most normal tissues with slower turnover rates.
